Mexico/Canada - More Money & Less Hassle than China.
We need a "Business Pivot" away from China to markets that are growing.
From the US Trade Representative,
“The top five purchasers of U.S. goods exports in 2022 were: Canada ($356.5 billion), Mexico ($324.3 billion), China ($150.4 billion), Japan ($80.2 billion), and the United Kingdom ($76.2 billion). U.S. goods exports to the European Union 27 were $350.8 billion.”
Okay, no one is arguing that China doesn’t matter. $150 billion in purchases of US exports counts. But…….. and its a big one…
China's population is aging and shrinking, while at the same time the Chinese government is turning inward and is not looking to expand opportunities for foreign companies in China, or for that matter foreign exports into their market.
Canada, the EU, Mexico, and the people with bad teeth, are all growing in population, growing in wealth, and want to sell their goods into the United States, as well as allow their consumers access to our goods. That’s the business reality of our future as a nation. China is getting old, shrinking, while the West is growing.
There's easier money to be made by US business in the West, and made not dealing with an undemocratic regime that sees us as their enemy. It’s time we focused on the future of US business, and that future isn’t China.
By 2040, just 17 years from now, China will be down between 27-34 million people, pick your starting point. But by 2050 China will be down over 100m from 2022 and the majority of the population will be above 45. China will get old before it gets rich. That’s not a profitable future for US exports and services.
As for the year 2050. — Well, I have been in Asia for 33 years. So if your 26 today and headed someplace, maybe China is where you’ll be needed for a job, but it won’t be where you go to sell anything.
With most US manufacturers operating at near peak capacity, demand in non-China markets picking up, and our services sector getting shut out in China, it just might be time to ignore the China consulting elite, media pundits, and the pro-Beijing lobbying/think tank industry.
The money spent by the China lobbyists through think tanks, groups like the National Committee on US China Relations, the US Chamber of Commerce, and any other former diplomat Ronnie Chan or Hank Greenberg can buy is pushing an illusion.
The demographics of China alone mark an end to many US business opportunities in the China market. The continued behavior of Xi JinPing and the CCP are a threat to current US business in China.
It’s time to look to democracies for our future. It’s time for US business to pivot from China and to the West.
